If your business shows up in ChatGPT one week and vanishes the next, you're not doing anything wrong. New research shows ChatGPT cycles through multiple hidden retrieval systems behind the scenes, and which one handles a given query determines which businesses get cited.
The Four Pipelines Behind This
Two SEO researchers, Chris Green and Suganthan Mohanadasan, found that ChatGPT uses at least four internal pipelines to pull web content: Labrador, Bright, Oxylabs, and SERP. Neither users nor businesses can see which pipeline is active at any given moment. In their study, 11.6% of identical prompts returned a different primary source, and when that pipeline switch happened, the overlap in cited websites dropped by nearly half.
For local businesses, this is more than a technical footnote. It means your visibility in AI search results is inherently unstable, and a single strong citation won't protect you the way a top Google Maps ranking once did. The research also points to clear steps that improve your odds across all these systems, not just one.
How to Protect Yourself Across All of Them
Build presence on multiple platforms. Your website alone isn't enough; review sites, directories, and local listing platforms each give different AI pipelines something to cite.
Keep your content readable as plain text. AI systems struggle with content buried in JavaScript or complex page structures, and structured data (schema markup) helps them confirm what you actually offer. If a bot can't read it easily, it won't cite it.
Keep your business information complete and current. Hours, services, pricing, and contact details need to be clearly stated on your site and listings; thin or outdated pages get skipped.
Don't treat AI visibility as a fixed metric. The same query can return different results on different days, so track AI mentions over time rather than treating any single appearance as a guarantee.
Watch your third-party review sites. Google Reviews, Yelp, and other directory listings were both fetched and cited by ChatGPT in this research, so your reputation platforms are also your AI visibility platforms.
The old playbook of ranking well on Google Maps and calling it done is getting more complicated. AI search tools are pulling from a wider, less predictable pool of sources. The businesses that show up consistently are the ones with a strong, diversified digital identity, not just a well-optimized Google Business Profile.
