If your business ranks well on Bing, that is good. But starting now, it does not guarantee you will show up when someone uses Bing's AI to ask for a recommendation or service in your area. Microsoft just made that official.
What Changed
Bing recently split its Webmaster Tools into two separate dashboards: one for traditional search performance, and a new one for tracking AI citations, meaning the passages your business website contributes when Bing Copilot or another AI answers a user's question. The new dashboard includes a metric called Citation Share, which shows what percentage of AI answer space your content occupies for specific queries.
A page that ranks on page one can score zero AI citations, while a lower-ranking page with the right structure gets pulled into AI answers regularly.
How Microsoft Scores AI Citations
Microsoft now evaluates content for AI answers on three factors: whether a passage can stand alone without needing the rest of the page for context, whether the information is current, and whether the source reads as credible and attributable. That is a different filter than the one that determines your traditional search ranking, and it requires a different approach to structuring your content.
What to Do About It
Audit your website content so each section can stand alone as a complete, useful answer without requiring the reader to read the rest of the page.
Check your robots.txt file to make sure your site is not accidentally blocking AI crawlers from accessing your pages.
Keep your content current. Stale service pages or outdated information can hurt your AI citation rate even if those pages still rank well in traditional search.
Do not rely on Bing Webmaster Tools alone for AI visibility. Track how often your business gets cited across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews too.
Treat traditional SEO and AI visibility as two separate goals that both need their own strategy, not one combined effort.
Search is no longer one thing. Businesses that optimize for both traditional rankings and AI citations will have a real visibility edge over competitors still treating SEO as a single game.
