Google is now showing a WhatsApp button in the local panel, right next to call, directions, website, and share. If your Business Profile has a WhatsApp number on it, a searcher can message you without ever visiting your site.
What Changed
According to Search Engine Roundtable, the button was spotted in Google Search local panels on October 7, and it may not be fully rolled out yet. Google began asking businesses to add WhatsApp numbers to their profiles a couple of years ago, and the report notes that Google has also added numbers on its own for some businesses.
That second part is the one to pay attention to. A contact method can show up on your listing without you ever deciding to put it there.
Why This Matters for Your Business
Every button on your listing is a front door. A plumber in Denver, a dentist in Boulder, or a consultant in Colorado Springs now has one more way for a customer to reach out, and one more place for outdated or unwanted details to cause trouble. That is a textbook case of profile drift: your listing slowly stops matching how you actually want to be contacted.
A WhatsApp button only helps if someone is watching that inbox. A number nobody answers is worse than no button at all.
What to Do About It
Search your own business name on Google, on your phone and desktop, and look at which buttons appear in the local panel.
Open your Business Profile and check whether a WhatsApp number is listed. If you did not add it, find out where it came from.
Decide whether WhatsApp is a channel you want. If yes, assign someone to answer it and set expectations for response time.
If not, remove the number from your profile and recheck in a few days, since this feature is still rolling out.
Make sure the phone number, website, and hours on your profile match what is on your site and other directories.
The takeaway: your Google listing is not a set-and-forget page. Check it regularly, because what searchers see may include details you never approved.
