Google: You Don't Need Special "AI SEO," Just Good SEO

Google's John Mueller says there is nothing special local businesses need to do for AI search visibility, just solid SEO fundamentals done well.

If you've been getting pitched on "AI search optimization" or "GEO" (generative engine optimization) lately, you're not alone, and according to Google, you can skip most of it. This week Google's John Mueller was asked directly whether certain industries need a separate strategy for showing up in AI-generated answers. His answer was blunt: no.

What Google Actually Said

When a user on Bluesky asked whether some industries could skip GEO and just focus on regular SEO, Mueller said there's nothing special businesses need to do for generative AI responses beyond what already works in normal search. That lines up with how the systems are built: AI Overviews and AI Mode pull from the same underlying search index that ranks your regular listings. There's no separate database an "AI SEO" consultant is getting you into.

The GEO Industry Cashing In on the Confusion

A whole cottage industry has sprung up around GEO: consultants, audit tools, llms.txt files, all promising to get your business mentioned by ChatGPT or Google's AI answers. If you've been wondering whether that deserves a new line item in your marketing budget, Google's own team just answered that question for you.

The businesses that already show up in AI-generated answers aren't doing anything exotic, they're the ones with strong ordinary local SEO: accurate listings, real reviews, and content that clearly answers what customers are asking.

Sticking With What Already Works

  • Be skeptical of any "AI visibility" package that duplicates work good local SEO already covers. Ask what it does differently before you pay for it.

  • Keep your Google Business Profile complete and current: hours, categories, services, and photos. It's one of the clearest signals both regular and AI search read.

  • Keep your name, address, and phone number consistent across directories and citations. These fundamentals haven't changed with AI search, they've just gotten more important.

  • Write website content that answers the actual questions customers ask you, in plain language. AI Overviews favor clear, direct answers over vague marketing copy.

  • Keep collecting genuine reviews and responding to them. Reputation signals feed both your star rating and how much AI systems trust you.

AI search still matters here, and it is only growing. What does not hold up is the idea that you need a second, separate strategy to be visible there. Solid local SEO is still the foundation, and right now it is doing double duty.
