Google's AI Overviews Can Now Generate the Tool Instead of Linking to Yours

Google now builds working calculators and comparison tools right into AI Overviews, beating real websites 90% of the time in testing. Here's what it means for your lead-gen tools.

Google just started building working calculators, comparison charts, and other interactive tools directly into its AI Overviews, on the spot, for any search that seems to call for one. If your local business relies on a quote calculator, cost estimator, or similar tool to capture leads, that's worth understanding now, not after your traffic dips.

Google Building the Tool Itself

Google is rolling out generative UI in AI Overviews worldwide in English. Search for something like a mortgage payment or a project cost, and Google can now generate a working interactive tool right on the results page instead of just linking you to one. In Google's own head-to-head testing against real websites, these generated interfaces won 90% of comparisons overall, and on straightforward informational searches they beat traditional top results 73.5% of the time versus just 19%.

Why Local Tool-Based Leads Are Exposed

A lot of local businesses, plumbers with a repair-cost estimator, consultants with a project calculator, agencies with a pricing quiz, use exactly this kind of tool to turn a search into a lead. If Google can spin up something similar right there in the results, some share of the people who would have clicked through and handed you their name and number may never leave the search page at all. It's not a clean sweep for Google though: custom-built websites still won 50% of comparisons against the AI-generated version, so a well-built tool still has an edge.

The businesses least exposed here are the ones whose tools do something Google can't easily fake: capture a name, a phone number, and a real next step, not just spit out a number.

Making Your Tool Do What Google's Can't

  • Audit every calculator or estimator on your site: does it just output a number, or does it also collect contact info and lead to a real conversation? A tool that only produces a number is the easiest thing for Google to replicate.

  • Add a clear next step after any tool result: a scheduling button, a direct phone number, a personalized follow-up offer, something a generated interface has no way to provide.

  • Watch traffic to your specific tool or calculator pages over the next few months, not just overall site traffic. A dip there, before anywhere else, is the early signal to watch for.

  • Keep structured data on your service pages accurate and current. Well-marked content is what feeds good source material into AI Overviews, whether or not Google ends up generating a tool from it.

  • Don't rebuild everything overnight. This just rolled out today in English, and Google's own reporting doesn't yet separate generated-interface impressions from standard AI Overviews, so there's no clean before-and-after number to chase yet.

This is a new front in Google keeping searchers on its own results page rather than sending them to yours. It won't replace a well-built lead-capture tool overnight, but it's worth watching, especially if a calculator or estimator is doing real work for your business today.
