When someone asks ChatGPT or Google's AI Overview for a plumber, a dentist, or a good burger nearby, they're not getting ten blue links to scroll through anymore. New research shows they're getting a short, pre-picked list, usually just three to five businesses, and if you're not on it, that customer may never know you exist.
The Data Behind This
Uberall recently benchmarked how AI assistants answer restaurant queries and found the typical response surfaces just three to five recommended brands per query. Separately, local SEO firm Whitespark tested 540 real search queries and found Google's AI Overviews now appear on 92% of informational searches and 97% of searches that blend information and buying intent, but only 15% of searches with obvious local intent, like “plumber near me.” In other words, AI is doing more of the shortlisting than most business owners realize, and it's not always showing up where you'd expect it to.
The Visibility Gap Nobody's Tracking
Google's own reporting on AI search visibility only tells you that a link to your page showed up somewhere. It doesn't tell you whether the AI actually recommended your business or just listed it as a source in passing. So even owners who dutifully check their “AI impressions” can't really tell if they made the shortlist or got buried in the fine print.
Making the Shortlist
Ask ChatGPT, Google's AI Overview, or Perplexity the questions a real customer would ask about your service, and see if your business actually comes up. Don't rely on your traditional search ranking alone.
Keep your name, address, phone number, and hours identical across every listing and directory. AI models cross-reference multiple sources to decide who to trust, and mismatched details are an easy way to get left off the list.
Make sure your key business information lives in plain, readable text on your site, not buried in graphics or scripts that an AI crawler can't parse.
Build up reviews and mentions beyond your own website. AI shortlists lean heavily on third-party signals, not just what's on your homepage.
Recheck this every few months. Which businesses AI recommends can shift as fast as the models behind it do.
The bottom line: getting found is no longer just about ranking high, it's about being one of the small handful of businesses AI decides to vouch for. That shift happened quietly, and most local businesses haven't caught up to it yet.
