Your Business Has an AI Entity Footprint Now: Here's How to Audit It

A new framework shows how to check what AI tools like ChatGPT actually understand about your business, and where the gaps are hurting your visibility.

If a customer asked ChatGPT to describe your business right now, would it get the answer right? Increasingly, that question matters more than where you rank on a results page.

Why AI Search Works Differently

For years, local SEO meant optimizing individual pieces one at a time: your website, your Google Business Profile, your citations. AI search tools work differently. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity don't crawl a single page and rank it; they pull from everywhere your business is mentioned and stitch together a summary. If those sources disagree, or if there simply isn't enough evidence out there, the AI guesses, hedges, or leaves you out of the answer entirely.

The Six-Area Framework

A framework getting attention this week gives a useful way to check where you stand. It scores a business across six areas: whether AI can clearly state what you do and who you serve, whether it can explain why you're different from the competitor down the street, whether outside sources back up your claims, whether your information is consistent everywhere it appears, whether your community and industry ties are visible, and whether you have a clear specialty AI can point to. Run through those six, and most local business owners find at least one or two gaps they didn't know existed.

How To Check Your Own Footprint

  • Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity to describe your business using only public information, then compare the answer to your actual website and Google Business Profile.

  • Check whether your business name, categories, service area, and hours say the same thing everywhere: your site, your Google Business Profile, and your directory listings.

  • Make sure independent proof exists somewhere online: reviews, certifications, press mentions, industry association listings. AI tools weigh outside validation heavily.

  • If you serve a niche or specialty, say so explicitly and repeatedly across your site and profiles. Vague “we do it all” positioning tends to disappear in AI summaries.

  • Revisit this check quarterly. AI models retrain and re-crawl on their own schedule, and an accurate summary from last quarter can drift.

None of this replaces the fundamentals: a complete, accurate Google Business Profile and consistent NAP data are still the backbone. But as more customers ask an AI assistant before they ever open a search engine, how confidently that assistant can vouch for your business is becoming its own kind of visibility, and it's worth checking on purpose rather than finding out by accident.
